The visitor center was closed when we were there. But we still waked around and the views were amazing, specially because it was snowing.

The drive alone is priceless, the mine is a bonus. You can practice gold panning. Leave time to hike above the mine as it's absolutely gorgeous. The nearby Reed Lakes hike is also great but rugged.
