Watch out for the agressive touts. No, you don't have to donate anything when you are only watching what's going on. Strictly no photos though...

Beautiful and spiritual place. Most burnings take place from 4pm until well into the night. Come after sunset, eg. on a boat after the ceremony at the main ghat. Taking pictures is strictly forbidden!

No hay que dejarse timar, algunos te diran que no puedes bajar al Ghat por respeto a los familiares, pero lo que quieren es venderte un sitio en los balcones para ver las ceremonias.

In the summer, try visiting after dark. It's cooler, and the fires and their shadows are more dramatic. You can get up quite close. Keep your camera/phone in your pocket; you're here just to watch.

Make sure to enter one of the hospices where the elderly poor are waiting to die. You'll get an explanation and can leave a donation (for buying wood) after being blessed by one of the elderly.
